'Dogs drop series finale to BYU

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team concluded Opening Weekend with a 6-4 loss to the BYU Cougars at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium on Monday night.

The Bulldogs and Cougars leveled out their season records at 2-2 after splitting the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fresno State struck first in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run following a throwing error by BYU's pitcher, taking an early 1-0 lead.

BYU responded in the fourth inning with a two-run homer, giving BYU a 2-1 edge. Fresno State quickly tied it up in the bottom half, scoring on an RBI single by Lee Trevino.

The game remained tight, with Fresno State reclaiming the lead in the sixth inning on a solo homer by Griffen Sotomayor. An additional run in the seventh, aided by a wild pitch, extended Fresno State's lead to 4-2.

BYU's offense came alive in the eighth inning as the Cougars capitalized on a Bulldog error, that led to four runs being scored.

Fresno State threatened in the ninth, but a double play sealed the victory for BYU.

Victor Arreola accumulated seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings on the mound, a career-high, allowing only two runs and two walks.
