California Governor Issues Statewide 'Stay At Home' Order Over Coronavirus

US-VIRUS-HEALTH-EPIDEMIC

California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statewide "stay at home" order as the number of cases of COVID-19 in the state jumped to 870. The order will require most of California's 40 million residents to stay indoors, while most businesses will be required to close.

Essential businesses such as banks, grocery stores, pharmacies, and gas stations will remain open.

"I can assure you home isolation is not my preferred choice, I know it's not yours, but it's a necessary one," Newsom said. "This is not a permanent state, this is a moment in time."

He stressed the importance of "social distancing" to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus

"We need to bend the curve in the state of California," Newsom said. "There's a social contract here. People, I think, recognize the need to do more. They will adjust and adapt as they have."
