All Elite Wrestling star Maxwell Jacob Friedman is reportedly the latest name to join the cast of Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 film, Deadline reported on Friday (September 27).
Details of Friedman's role have been kept private, though PWInsider's Mike Johnson claims the former AEW World Champion will play 'Gordie,' one of Gilmore's sons. Actress Julie Bowen, who played Gilmore's love interest in the original film, and actor Christopher McDonald, who played arch rival golfer Shooter McGavin, are both confirmed to reprise their roles in the Netflix sequel film.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, latin hip-hop superstar Bad Bunny, golf legend John Daly and actres Margaret Qualley are also confirmed to appear in the film. Netflix announced official plans for the film in May following months of speculation.
"Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie coming to Netflix," the streaming service wrote at the time.
Sandler has long had a partnership with Netflix, which includes producing and starring in the exclusive releases of The Ridiculous Six, Murder Mystery and You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. Happy Gilmore is among the actor and comedian's most popular films, serving as half of the namesake of his production company, Happy Madison, along with Billy Madison, which was released one year prior in 1995.
Gilmore, a failed hockey player, joins the Pro Golf Tour after discovering his incredible driving ability in order to raise funds for his grandmother to avoid eviction. The titular character is trained by former golf pro Chubbs Peterson, played the late Carl Weathers, who died earlier this year.
